The University College London (UCL) research project is looking at how unpaid carers (family members or friends) of people who use mental health services are involved in decisions about risk and safety. They are are planning a study that aims to explore carers perceived barriers, and enablers to shared decision-making in risk assessment and management. Previously shared on our Newsletter, the deadline for expressing interest has now been extended to 22nd August:
“Lived Experience Advisory Group Opportunity
We are seeking 4-6 experts by experience who are interested in joining a Lived Experience Advisory Group (LEAG) for a Wellcome-funded study led by Dr Nafiso Ahmed at UCL.
What is the study about?
We want to learn more about how unpaid carers (family members or friends) of people who use mental health services are involved in decisions about risk and safety. We are planning a study that aims to explore carers perceived barriers, and enablers to shared decision-making in risk assessment and management. This will involve conducting one-to-one interviews with carers of people who use mental health services in the UK.
What will the LEAG do?
We hope that the LEAG can contribute to all stages of the research process.
We are currently preparing an ethics application and would like to make sure that the study materials are appropriate, clear, and comprehensive. We would like to discuss the materials and the study more generally with the group before starting recruitment.
This would involve reading the participant information sheet, consent form, and topic guide, and offering any feedback you have on how to potentially improve them. We’d also like to discuss the study more generally, to hear your thoughts about the best way to structure this to support the people being interviewed.
How often will the LEAG meet, and where?
The group will meet at least four times over the course of the project, which is planned to run from August 2025 to December 2026.
Meeting will usually be held online, and there may be occasional in person meetings if required or preferred.
Meetings will last about an hour, and there will be additional time to review study material.
Who can apply:
We are looking for carers over the age of 18, who have lived experience providing unpaid care to someone who has used mental health services, and/or is living with a severe mental illness including psychotic disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar, and major depression.
Will there be payment and expenses?
We are able to offer you a voluntary involvement payment for your expertise of £25 per hour plus £5 per meeting for internet cost.
How do I apply?
To express an interest in taking part, please email Isis Harvey at isis.harvey.22@ucl.ac.uk by 22nd August telling us a little about yourself.”
